CITY GIRL FARMING | Sustainable Living for Regular People

Freedom!

07/03/2013

If I was a chicken in my backyard, I’d be thankful for freedom…

… to roam, take dust baths, chase insects, lay eggs in a nest box, a space of my very own on the roost…

I’d be thankful for a coop with lots of space, my own ‘chicken’ backyard, daily treats (blueberries, grapes and watermelon among the favorites) and shade under the big walnut tree.

Thousands of chickens in the USA and around the world aren’t so lucky….and although my chickens don’t know the difference, they lead a good life. I’m thankful to live in a city (and a country) that allows me to raise humanely treated hens that entertain and enlighten me and lay me eggs almost daily.

I’m also thankful for the thousands of other things I am allowed because of the country I live in. Thank you to all of you who have served our country to make it the place it is today.  Thank you for your time and sometimes even for your life. For those times when you could have been in comfortable beds, with your family, celebrating the 4th of July with a picnic, but weren’t.

And thank you, too, to all the families that went without (or even lost) their loved ones for my freedom. Thank you seems so small.

Thank you for all of it.

Happy Independence Day everyone!

Being Thankful, Chickens, Holidays
